Top Employers in Arizona by Ken & Sharon Lloyd

Those interested in pursuing a career in the retail industry will find that Arizona is home to some of the best retail companies in the country. Among Arizona’s top five employers in the state, three of the five are retail stores with the other two being healthcare services and finance. Here is a quick rundown of the top 5 employers in Arizona for 2015:

#1- Wal-Mart Stores, Inc.

Wal-Mart continues to dominate as the state’s top employer. Between the years 2013 and 2014, Wal-Mart added nearly 1,000 new employees. It employs more than 1.3 million people, full-time and part-time, throughout the state in its 123 locations. This includes employees at the supercenters, regular discount store, Sam’s Club, and other locations.

#2 – Banner Health

The healthcare industry is picking up and challenging the retail industry. Coming in as the number two employer in Arizona is Banner Health. Banner, which is based in Phoenix, owns and operates 25 hospitals not only in Arizona, but in seven other states too. In 2013, Banner employed 28,011 people in various jobs. As of 2015, this healthcare conglomerate employs approximately 39,000 people.

#3 – Kroger Co.

Operating in Arizona as Fry’s Marketplace and Fry’s Food Store, Kroger has 123 food stores in the state and two jewelry stores. Kroger’s corporate headquarters in in Ohio, but it is the number three employer in Arizona. According to the company, there were 17,001 employees (full-and part-time) in 2014 with the number continually rising. From part-time retail positions to full-time management and corporate jobs, Kroger Co., continues to contribute to the economic stability of Arizona’s residents, providing jobs and benefits.

#4 – Albertsons Inc.

Albertsons is a corporation with more than 600 stores nationwide and more than 60,000 employees. Of those 60K employees, 16,148 (as of 2014) are based in Arizona. Since its founding in 1939, Albertsons has segmented its holdings and then reacquired these assets through corporate buyouts and mergers. In 2006, Albertsons regained the stores it sold to Super-Valu, and in 2014, it bought out Safeway Stores for $9.2 billion.

#5 – Wells Fargo

Wells Fargo employs approximately 15,300 people in Arizona. Throughout the country, it has more than 8,700 locations and specializes in mortgages, car loans, investments, insurance, bank, and financial products. In Arizona, there are 183 bank locations, helping this banking conglomerate secure fifth place among all Arizona employers.
